Sir, I am trying to learn the correct way to do the synching of AQ names with FS names. I have the latest version of AQ, and it seems to have a lot of helps and aids to facilitate the syncing process, it’s almost overwhelming. Do you have a sheet of instructions or a tutorial that will lead me through it, step by step? Your help will be greatly appreciated.
    Don Bass

    • There is some initial setup required to sync with FS.
      1. Click the ‘Tools’ tab at the top of the screen.
      2. Select ‘Preferences’ from the menu.
      3. Click the ‘FamilySearch’ tab.
      4. Put a check in the ‘Enable FamilySearch features’ checkbox.
      5. Click the ‘OK’ button.
That needs to be done only once.

      1. Click the ‘FamilySearch’ tab at the top of the screen.
      2. Select ‘Login’ from the menu.
      3. Enter your FamilySearch ‘User Name’ and ‘Password.’
      4. If your computer is in a secure location put a check in the ‘Remember this ID and Password’ checkbox.
      5. Put a check in the ‘Automatically sign me in when needed’ checkbox.
      6. Click the ‘Sign in’ button.

Records with a value in ‘Death Date’ will show a temple icon on the Family view and the Pedigree view. Clicking this icon brings up the process for syncing. When a record is synced the icon turns dark blue.

Incline Software has several videos of instruction. Here is a link to the ‘Ancestral Quest Learning Center‘ .

Scan down this list looking for videos dealing with syncing.

Your Program is very usefull and great, but I have one problem.
    Hi,
I have bought and installed AQ 15.0.19 , 2/25/2019. During working with it I merged 2 trees and now AQ starts my aq-file allways with a not wanted starting person. How can I configure the program that way, that it will start in the future allways with my person? I know how to switch starting persons during running the progi, but I want to configure, save and close the aq-file that way, that it will start the file next time with my person. At the moment after start with the wrong person I have to look up my name in the persons list and switch to it as starting person in the tree. I want to change that for good. Please Help, with kind regards

      I recommend two steps:

      1. Open your file and click on the Tools tab at the top of the screen. This will open the Preferences window, which has eleven tabs at the top. Click on the Database tab. On the left side there is a box with the title Initial RIN on Startup. Here you have two possible choices. Click on the Use radio button. If you know the RIN for your starting person, enter it in the Use: box and click the OK button on the bottom of the screen, and go to step 2. If you do not know the RIN, click on the Search button. This will bring up the Find Individual/Marriage screen. In the Type of Record to Find box, select Individual and click on the Search for Individual button. This will present an alphabetical list of the individuals in your file. Find and highlight your starting person, then click the OK button.

      2. When you return to the Preferences window, there is one more important step. It is important to have your backup files in a logical order. In the lower right corner of the screen is a box titled Backup (.aqz) File Names. It contains two check boxes and one radio button choice. Click both check boxes and the top (2000-06-25) radio button. This will append the year, month, day, hour and minute when each backup begins to the name of the new backup file. This will force the operating system to always present the names of your backup files in chronological order, and it also prevents you from overwriting a previous backup file, unless you do two backups of that file within the same minute. This can be extremely important in you make a big mistake in your file, and don’t realize it for two or more backups.

I never delete a backup file. A large hard drive or SSD is cheaper than the time needed for the reconstruction of a file with no backup.

How I can I learn how to use the Research Manager & To Do list and what they are capable of doing?

    • Wow! To Do/Research appears simple on the surface, but it has some powerful tools which expand it into a very useful and powerful research tool. I guess I should write an article on this topic for AQ Will Do. In the mean time, I have two suggestions.

First, use the Add To Do/Research Item button to open the Edit To Do/Research Item screen. This button is found just to the left of the blue Research Manager button on the Menu bar. When the screen opens, click on the Help button. Read the To Do Items help screen. When you have read this, go to the links at the bottom of the screen. Click on Research Manager. Read the Research Manager help screen. When you finish it, use the Back button to return you to the To Do Items help screen. Go to the bottom of this screen, and this time click on Research Log Report. Read this screen. When you have finished it, go to the bottom of the screen and click on Research Manager Sort. This brings up a screen with the title Research Items Sort. When you have read this screen, click on the Back button. This time, at the bottom of the screen, click on Research Manager Filter. Read this screen. This is a lot of reading, and these directions are convoluted, but it will give you some insight into what you can do with this tool.

Second, get a copy of the Ancestral Quest Version 14 Users Guide, and read chapter nine. This chapter discussed the Research Manager.

Just a hint. I haven’t found a way to clear the Category drop down window, so think hard before you start adding entries there.

I’ll do some more investigating, and post an article about this subject in AQ Will Do.

I would like to hear from you!
